Colette McEachin wins by large margin in Commonwealth's Attorney primary
For the second time, Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Colette McEachin has held off challenger Tom Barbour Jr. to retain the Democratic nomination.
Similar to 2021 it was a lopsided margin, with McEachin taking 72% of the vote to 28% for Barbour.
McEachin, who reached office in a special election in 2020, will almost assuredly win reelection for the second time in November's general election.
McEachin is the widow of the late state senator and congressman Donald McEachin, who died in 2022 after a battle with cancer.
A spokesperson for McEachin's campaign said she would release a statement on her victory in the coming days.
"I’ve called to congratulate Ms. McEachin on a race well run," Barbour wrote. "This is how we move our party forward as Democrats: by demanding action on issues that matter and building new bases of support. We are exceptionally proud of our team for doing this necessary work this cycle. Onward!"
Update: McEachin released a statement by email on Wednesday morning.
"I started my career as an assistant prosecutor in the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office 30 years ago. I have spent those years being the voice for victims of crime and defending the rule of law. My focus as a prosecutor is to ensure public safety for our city, second chances for those who are willing to accept them, and accountability for everyone.
"Last night, Richmond considered my record and all the work we have accomplished together over the last 5 years—including creating a criminal justice reform unit, implementing restorative justice, advancing our therapeutic dockets that reduce recidivism, and investing this office in community-centered public safety. Last night, the citizens of Richmond spoke resoundingly in support of this work and in support of experienced leadership.
"Richmond is safer today than it was 5 years ago, and with your trust and support, I will work every day to continue that progress."
