April's top stories and more: From the Audience Desk
Another month just whizzed by.
Here is the rundown of your favorite stories from April, and then I’m addressing a reader question about The Richmonder’s nonprofit status.
Most Visited Story
Sarah Vogelsong’s story about the city stepping up efforts to ticket those who park too close to intersections drew the most eyeballs in April. The “Keep Corners Clear” initiative is important to you, either because you are a chronic violator and need to know where they’re focusing, or you’re passionate about making Richmond’s streets safer. Or maybe both? This Floyd Ave. resident is cheering the enforcement effort.
Three Cheers
The second most read story in April was another Sarah story, this one about the beloved Pump House getting a new roof. I love the lede: As Giles Garrison walked through the Gothic halls of Richmond’s Pump House, her footsteps were punctuated by a soft but persistent sound: Drip. Drip. Drip.
The Richmonder community seems universally happy about this building’s return to splendor.
Chuckle of the Month
Michael’s story about the city’s PSA made with AI included details on how The Richmonder staff knew. I watched the video and am embarrassed to say the No Parking sign in the front yard completely escaped me. As did the piece of mail with no address. I hope (but doubt) AI stays this dumb. It’s funny.
Answering a reader question
Why is The Richmonder a nonprofit?
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit recognized by the IRS. To us, that goes hand in hand with staying independent and free from outside influence.
- Did you know that some local news organizations are for-profit? That doesn’t sound so terrible until you realize part of your membership or paid subscription is supporting a national media empire led by an ultra-wealthy CEO. Just because they call you a “member” does not make it a tax-deductible donation. It may just be profit.
- We have donors and generous supporters, but we’ll never let anyone give anonymously, or pressure our editorial direction. Corporate sponsors agree to this before we ever move forward with a partnership. (Read our full policy here.)
- We strive to be good stewards of our donors’ money through humble salaries and a streamlined staff. Currently, 85% of the money we’ve spent has been on people, not overhead. (We earned a Platinum rating from Guidestar.)
- We’re Richmonders from top to bottom. Your donations power 100% local stories that serve to improve our beloved region.

Enjoy your weekend,

P.S. – Tax law changes will allow almost everyone to deduct up to $1,000 in donations to authorized charities this year. Make a one-time donation to support our efforts, or join us as a champion for $29.99 a month and get a free hat or mug!
