UPDATE: Richmond Police have arrested a man who they believe shot a woman and two teenagers this morning in Highland Park. One of the teenagers has died, while the other two were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, identified by police as Levy Nelson, 41, of Richmond, was apprehended by Henrico County Police.

"Henrico Police located Nelson in his truck and attempted to stop him," according to a press release. "Nelson collided with several vehicles, including HPD police vehicles, before Henrico Police were able to make the apprehension. A Henrico Police officer was injured during the apprehension."

Nelson has been charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Richmond Police said additional charges are pending.

According to police, Nelson fled the crime scene in a gray Ford F-150, an image of which was captured on an Automatic License Plate Reader, leading police to ask the public for help locating the suspect.

At a press conference, police chief Rick Edwards said he believed the shooting was domestic in nature.

Mayor Danny Avula released a statement. He wrote: "I am aware of the horrific shooting event that occurred late this morning. Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards and his team are fully engaged, and we expect more information soon. Right now, I ask our community to keep the victims in your prayers."

Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras, along with the School Board, confirmed that the known fatality was a student at John Marshall High.

"We cannot accept a reality where children carry the burden of gun violence in places meant to nurture and protect them," the statement said. "There are no words to fully capture the depth of sorrow felt by all who have been impacted, except to remind the students and staff who may be struggling that you are not alone. Tomorrow, we will provide on-site counseling support at each campus to help our students and staff process this tremendous loss.

"In the past seven years, we have lost more than 50 students to gun violence. Each and every one of these young people was a bright light with the potential to change the world. RPS and all of Richmond are dimmer today as a result of their loss.

"As a society, we can and must do more to protect our children from gun violence. This simply has to stop. We pray that the necessary steps are taken to end this uniquely American horror once and for all."
