Richmond's Sub Rosa Bakery closed 'for the foreseeable future' after Sunday morning fire

Sub Rosa Bakery, located in Richmond's Church Hill, was closed after a fire on Sunday morning.

The owners posted on their Instagram page that the bakery will be closed "today and for the foreseeable future" while they discover the extent of the damage.

Sub Rosa has been written about nationally and talked about locally for its traditional methods of baking, and has become a neighborhood institution since opening in 2012.

The bakery also caught on fire about a decade ago.

Fire officials arrived at about 6:45 a.m., and said everybody in the bakery and the second-floor apartments was able to escape safely, with no injuries reported.

According to the Richmond Fire Department, the fire started in the attic and was beginning to spread to the second-floor apartments when crews arrived and were able to contain it.

Style Weekly shared a photo of a large hole in the roof of the bakery, indicating a potentially lengthy rebuilding process.
