Richmond airport will connect Rental Car Center to terminal

Richmond International Airport has opened bidding to connect the facility's Rental Car Center to the main terminal building.

The construction project, which was estimated last year at $25 milllion, will also build a small park with room for a food truck near the rental car area.

Rental car agencies will relocate their kiosks from their current area in the center of the main building to the area next to the rental car garage.

A request for proposals issued by the airport touted the benefits of the move, saying it would provide "more intuitive access" for people renting cars.

"At the radial center point of the connector will be an outdoor pocket park with new hardscape and softscape, seating, interactive displays, as well as accommodations for a future food truck," it read.

The airport also recently unveiled its first public art, a sculpture of hummingbirds located between the two daily parking garages. It was made by national artist Matthew Mazzotta, who created a famous flamingo sculpture in the Tampa airport.

Funding must be secured, and construction would be estimated to take two years.
