Animal control officials in Richmond are attempting to contain a bear that was spotted wandering through back yards and climbing trees in Oregon Hill early Thursday.

“The bear was pretty chill,” said Romain Lheritier, a Fan resident who spotted the animal near the intersections of S Laurel and Albemarle streets while running a little after 7 a.m. “It’s difficult to think they are dangerous because they look so fluffy and nice."

Lheritier said animal care and control responded quickly.

As of 9 a.m., VCU Police and a city animal control vehicle were parked in an Oregon Hill alleyway, warning passersby to avoid the area.

Officials said they were waiting for assistance from state game authorities.
