VMFA closes some galleries ahead of expansion work

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is closing some of its galleries to prepare for upcoming renovation and expansion work.

At the moment, the closed galleries are:

  • African Art Galleries | Level 2
  • Indigenous American Art Galleries | Level 2
  • Pre-Columbian Art Galleries | Level 2
  • Lewis Galleries of Mid to Late 20th-Century Art | Level 2
  • Lewis Galleries of Art Deco and Art Nouveau | Level 3

The museum last expanded in 2010, with the addition of the McGlothlin Wing. Since then, the museum said its collection has nearly doubled in size, to more than 50,000 works of art.

The new wing is scheduled to open in 2028, and will cost an estimated $261 million.
