UPDATED: Some Richmonders report brown water as broken pipe is returned to service

Update from the city: “DPU crews have completed hydrant flushing to remove any remaining sedimentation. Customers still experiencing discolored water should flush their plumbing through their cold-water faucet. If after several minutes the issue is not resolved, customers can report it to DPU at 804-646-4646.”

Original story:

The City of Richmond said Monday night that it is aware of some customers reporting water discoloration.

"This is likely due to returning the 36 inch water main back to service after isolating it over the July 4 weekend and not a water quality issue," a Department of Public Utilities spokesperson wrote. "Crews are actively flushing hydrants to remove any sedimentation.

"Customers may also flush their plumbing through their cold-water faucet."

UPDATE: Water restoration achieved, full repairs to take ‘several weeks’
“During that time, we will continue to maintain service to all users, and water disruption is not anticipated.

On July 3, a water main break resulted in reduced pressure for a number of customers. Those repairs were completed, and the pipe was planned to be restored to service on Monday.

In a press release, the city detailed the return to service.

"Crews successfully repaired the 36-inch water main in the canal by replacing the damaged section," the release said. "Subsequent pressure testing, disinfection and water quality sampling to verify the integrity of the pipe and ensure it meets all regulatory requirements have all been completed. DPU will return the section of pipe to service on Monday. This will allow a full contingent of staff to be available to meet the needs of system and our customers."
