RPS seeking new chief talent officer, six months after hiring the current one
Less than half a year after the position was filled, Richmond Public Schools is on the hunt for another chief talent officer.
The division published a job listing for the position on Monday.
In a social media post, Elizabeth Veliz, the director overseeing human resources, labor relationships, employments and benefits, shared that she will be stepping down from the post effective June 30, 2026.
“This departure is bittersweet, but I leave knowing the systems, relationships, and momentum built during this time will continue long after I’m gone,” she wrote.
An RPS spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The position had been vacant following the dismissal of former Chief Talent Officer Maggie Clemmons. Eighteen employees had filed numerous complaints to the division, alleging that she created a “hostile” work environment and discriminated against workers of color and violated policies.

Clemmons filed a federal lawsuit last September against the Richmond School Board and Superintendent Jason Kamras over a meeting that called for her dismissal, saying that the school’s top officials allowed employees to publicly defame her. The lawsuit was moved to Richmond Circuit Court in February. The hearing for the case is on June 5.
Veliz’s departure also follows the recent dismissal of Bobby Hathaway, the division’s former director of facilities, who was accused of improperly spending school district money and personal use of RPS property.
