Police suspect cold was factor in death of man found in Northside

As Richmond continues to dig out from a winter storm, police say the body of an unidentified man was found under a walkway at the Pine Camp Arts and Community Center in the city’s Northside.

In a news release, police said there were no signs of foul play and the unusually cold weather “may have been a factor” in the man’s death.

“The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death,” the Richmond Police Department said. “Detectives are continuing their efforts to identify the male.”

In preparation for the storm, city officials said they were beefing up shelter resources for the city’s homeless population. The Salvation Army Inclement Weather Shelter is open at 1900 Chamberlayne Ave. The city has opened an additional overnight shelter at the  Linwood Robinson Senior Center at 700 N. 26th St.

Public libraries are also serving as warming shelters.

“This is absolutely tragic news,” Mayor Danny Avula said in the release on the man’s death. “My heart is with everyone affected. If you or someone you know needs a safe, warm place, please, head to the Salvation Army Inclement Weather Shelter or the Linwood Robinson Senior Center.”

Police said they were called to Pine Camp Tuesday afternoon at 2:51 p.m. for a report of a person down. The man was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
