Maymont adds two coyote pups to newly restored Virginia Wildlife Trail
Two young coyotes will live on Maymont's Virginia Wildlife Trail starting Saturday.
Bernie, a 1-year-old found orphaned near Pittsburgh last year, will join a 4-month-old female who was found near San Diego earlier this year.
Their rescue organizations ultimately determined they would not be able to develop the skills needed to be released into the wild.
Saturday also marks the debut of the newly restored trail, which has been closed for the past two years as part of major renovation work at the park.

“We are delighted to provide a forever home to these adorable coyote pups as they grow into their roles as animal ambassadors at Maymont,” Parke Richeson, President & CEO of Maymont Foundation, wrote in an email. “These two are very active and curious and allow us to teach visitors and students about special adaptations they’ve evolved to survive in close proximity with humans across North America.”
The younger coyote will spend a significant amount of time in a nursery room at the facility's nature center at first.
Admission to the nature center is paid, but the Wildlife Trail is free, with a suggested donation.
