Richmond voters rebuke Stoney as Hashmi declares victory in Democratic LG race

State Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, D-Chesterfield, declared victory Tuesday night in a neck-and-neck-and-neck competition for the Lieutenant Governor nomination.

Hashmi had 27.5% of the vote, with former Richmond Levar Stoney at 26.7% and State Sen. Aaron Rouse at 26.2%.

Of Richmond's 72 voting precincts, Stoney won just 14 of them, with many voters telling The Richmonder that two recent water crises were top of mind as they cast their ballot.

Hashmi will now run alongside gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger and attorney general candidate Jay Jones in the November general election. Read more here.

Commonwealth's Attorney: Colette McEachin cruised to the nomination with 72% of the vote.

Sheriff: Antoinette Irving will run for a third term after defeating her challenger.

Stoney's loss is certainly the main headline this morning, but the LG race also stands as a compelling case for adopting ranked-choice voting, which allows voters to support their preferred candidate, but also weigh in on alternate matchups.
