Incumbent LeQuan Hylton wins special election to Chesterfield Board of Supervisors

Incumbent LeQuan Hylton won Tuesday’s Democratic primary special election for the Dale District Board of Supervisors seat with roughly 57% of the vote.

Hylton took 1,858 votes, and opponent Kathryn Crosby received 1,406 — excluding provisional and mail-in ballots.

He’ll likely be the winner in Nov. 3’s general election because the local Republican Party didn’t nominate an opponent. Assuming Hylton does win this November, he’ll hold the position until 2027, when all Board of Supervisors seats are up for election.

Hylton has held the role on an interim basis since January. Dale’s previous elected supervisor, Jim Holland, tapped Hylton before his death in October. Holland served on the board for five terms.

Before the Board of Supervisors, Hylton represented the Dale District on Chesterfield’s Planning Commission for six years. During that time, he and the commission, alongside VCU’s Wilder School, studied what county residents want from their community — namely, folks want restaurants, medical facilities, childcare and gyms.

While Hylton said he’s hoping to apply these goals during his tenure as supervisor, he’s also looking to keep listening and learning from his community. Some of his policymaking inspiration comes from grocery lines, church and other everyday settings, he said.

In an interview before the election, he said he wants to build on the successes of Holland’s tenure while also breathing fresh air into his district.

“It’s a handoff between the generation that’s in front of us and my generation,” Hylton said. “If we don’t step up, a lot of times I have to ask myself: ‘Who will?’”

“Everything we touch should be improved. That’s my goal for the Dale District.”

As the father of three daughters, including two public school students, Hylton said his family's experience has shaped his priorities. He wants to push for a new elementary school in the district and expand access to early childhood education.

The Richmonder reached out to Hylton for comment on Tuesday night but didn’t immediately receive a response.
