Freight train derails into the canal along Capital Trail at Dock Street
Richmond Fire Department crews will work through the weekend to stabilize a freight train that derailed in Shockoe Bottom.
According to the city and CSX, three of the train's 200 cars have fallen into the canal, with two other cars unstable as of Friday night.
Fire officials said their immediate goal is to stabilize the train.
The train derailed along Dock Street at 20th Street, next to the start of the Virginia Capital Trail.
"All cars on this train were carrying grain, and, at this time, no HAZMAT issues have been reported," fire officials wrote in a statement. "No injuries have been reported."
Photos were posted to social media showing grain spilling to the ground from a train car above. A Facebook user also posted photos of the scene.
