Flight from Richmond to Cancun will be the first to use new customs facility

Breeze Airways announced it will begin flying nonstop between Richmond International Airport and Cancun, Mexico twice a week starting in January, 2027.

The flight will operate on Mondays and Fridays, and in a press release, Breeze said fares will start at $149.

The flight will be the first to use the newly renovated Federal Inspection Services facility, which received more than $4 million in federal funding in 2022 for the $7.2 million project.

Richmond has previously had international service, most recently to Bermuda, but that flight had passenger pre-clear customs in Bermuda, so it wasn't needed in Richmond.

Richmond, Bermuda are forever linked through a momentous storm
Jamestown, Shakespeare and an airline are linked through one momentous storm.

The airport is continuing its efforts to land a transatlantic flight, though if that flight is ultimately through Dublin, passengers would pre-clear there as well.

Richmond officials are courting a nonstop flight to Europe. It won’t be cheap.
“We are losing projects because of a lack of direct flights.”

In a press release on Tuesday, airport CEO Perry J. Miller touted the new service.

"For the first time in more than a decade, Richmond-area travelers will enjoy direct access to one of Mexico's most in-demand destinations, connecting our region with the Yucatan Peninsula's vibrant culture, world-renowned beaches, and rich history."
