Threats cause early dismissals, disruption at multiple area schools
Multiple schools across Richmond and Henrico were evacuated, locked down or dismissed early on Thursday as the result of called-in threats.
In Richmond, the list of impacted schools is known to include Franklin Military Academy, John Marshall High, Open High, Richmond Community, Richmond High School of the Arts, Richmond Success Academy and Thomas Jefferson High.
In Henrico, Freeman High School and Godwin High School were identified as being impacted by the threats.
Richmond police put out the following statement:
"At approximately 11:33 a.m., a Richmond Department of Emergency Communications dispatcher received a call of a threat to a Richmond Public School building. Less than an hour later, another call was received with a similar threat to several other schools in Henrico County and in Richmond.
"The Richmond Police Department coordinated with the Henrico Police Department, RPS and a few Richmond private schools to begin the investigation. The RPD Bomb Squad and other resources responded to several locations. Nothing suspicious or dangerous has been located.
"Richmond Police detectives are investigating and ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000."
Richmond Public Schools said in a statement that early dismissals were the most prudent course of action.
"Given the estimated length of time for searches — and the lateness in the school day — we opted for an early release, rather than having students wait outside or on buses," a spokesperson wrote. "We are grateful for the fast action and partnership of the Richmond Police Department."
The spokesman added that the impacted schools will be open on Friday.
