Richmond to install 10 red light cameras
Starting later this month, Richmond will install cameras that monitor and fine drivers who run red lights at key intersections around the city.
Virginia law mandates that signs be placed at intersections where the cameras will be installed, and caps the fines, which are sent by mail, to $50 each.
The first intersection will be Main and 25th Street, followed by nine others identified by the city as high-risk. Under state law, the city is capped at installing 23 red-light cameras across the city.

“Failing to stop at red lights is dangerous behavior that leads to serious injuries and tragic fatalities,” Chief of Police Rick Edwards wrote in a press release. “These cameras will hopefully reduce collisions at these intersections, leading to safer roadways for all in Richmond.”
The city will provide a 30-day grace period after the cameras are installed before ticketing begins.
The cameras will wait at least 0.5 seconds after a light turns red before recording the offending driver and sending the information to police to verify the ticket.
These are the locations where cameras will be installed:
North of the James River
1. 25th Street and Main Street
2. Belvidere Street and Cary Street
3. Brookland Park Boulevard and Chamberlayne Avenue
4. Chamberlayne Parkway and Laburnum Avenue
5. Mechanicsville Turnpike and Fairfield Way
South of the James River
1. Belt Boulevard and Hull Street Road
2. Cowardin Avenue and Hull Street
3. German School Road and Midlothian Turnpike
4. Commerce Road and Maury Street
5. Hull Street Road and Warwick Road
The city will hold an information event about transportation safety next Tuesday, Sept. 23.
RVA Builds: The Infrastructure Information Initiative Event will be held at Main Street Station, and requires a free RSVP through the city.
