Maymont asks for help naming baby porcupines

Maymont announced it has welcomed two baby porcupines who were born in Michigan, but need a new home.

They'll ultimately be housed along the facility's new Virginia Wildlife Trail once remodeling is finished in 2026. For now, they'll be on display starting Friday in the Robins Nature Center.

Contributors to Maymont can suggest names until August 17, at which point a vote will be taken.

“Porcupines were once native to Virginia, until habitat loss and hunting depleted their numbers in the mid-1800s. They are beginning to return to our region, but are still very rare to see,” said Maymont President Parke Richeson.

One of the porcupettes has already been named Sandy, after a donor.
