Richmond fights losing battle against snow, ice as temperatures stay below freezing

Richmond will take its first tentative steps back to normalcy on Wednesday, with city and county offices opening on a limited basis, even as schools remain out across the region.

Officials said below-freezing temperatures are making it hard to clear the snow and ice in traditional ways, as plows are largely ineffective against the giant sheets of ice in most residential neighborhoods, and salt stops working when temperatures drop below 20 degrees, as they have each night.

⚠️
Today could be the biggest test yet of how the area's infrastructure handles the extended snow, as many workplaces and stores reopen even as neighborhood roads show no signs of thawing.

And while a city official said roads could be back to normal as soon as Friday, he acknowledged that another potential snow is on the horizon for this weekend. Read more here.

Data: Richmond teachers are making more than neighboring counties this school year

On average, educators in Richmond Public Schools are earning $72,303 this school year, a $4,567 increase over last year’s numbers.

📈
Richmond teachers’ compensation has risen 41% since 2018, when the average salary was $51,530, according to VDOE data.

It also marks a regional milestone for RPS educators, as the average salary in Richmond is higher than the average salary in Chesterfield and Henrico counties. The last time RPS held the top spot locally was 2019, according to the state data. Read more, and see a school-by-school breakdown, here.

VCU's strengths – and weaknesses – on display in rivalry win over Richmond

Clearly the stronger, quicker and more talented team, VCU had little issue holding Richmond at arm's length for most of Tuesday night's game.

The Spiders, though, put a brief scare into the Siegel Center crowd in the final minutes.

VCU forward Lazar Djokovic acknowledged that the win was nice, but said the Rams are hoping to produce more dominant showings down the stretch.

"I still feel like we should have won this game by 20 or 30 points," he said. Read more here.

The Richmonder's downtown offices were reopened yesterday. It was smooth sailing on the main roads, but the street in front of my house remains a 2-inch-thick block of ice and snow. It'll probably be like that for a while.
