Richmond’s School Board is looking for someone to temporarily represent the city’s 6th District after current member Shonda Harris-Muhammed steps down Dec. 31.

The board announced Monday it is seeking candidates for the seat who will serve in the role until a special election is called to fill it. Any appointee would also have a chance to run for the seat at that time.

To be eligible for appointment, a candidate has to be registered to vote in the city of Richmond and live in the 6th, the long, skinny district that runs from Highland Park in the north through downtown and Manchester and along the Interstate 95 corridor.

More information about applying for the seat can be found here. The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, with interviews beginning Jan. 20 and an appointment made by the School Board during the first week of February.

Harris-Muhammed, an administrator with Southampton County Public Schools, announced her coming departure to serve as superintendent of an unidentified school district earlier this month. She had previously served two full terms on the board — between 2012 and 2016 and between 2020 and 2024 — and was reelected with no opposition in November 2024.
