Public notices are legally required notices to the public that an action impacting them is being discussed or might occur. Common examples are zoning changes, City Council or Board of Supervisors meetings, liquor license applications or trustee sales. [****Read more here.**](https://www.vpa.net/advocacy/public-notices/)

In 2024, [Virginia Code § 8.01-324](https://www.vpa.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/2025-Public-Notice-Guid.pdf#:~:text=publication%20in%20lieu%20of%20publication%20in%20a,the%20notice%20is%20required%20to%20be%20published%3B) expanded the definition of *newspaper of record* to include online-only news outlets that meet an extensive criteria of serving the public through their reporting.

The Richmonder was certified as meeting that criteria by circuit courts in Richmond, Henrico and Hanover, and expects certification in Chesterfield imminently.

Public notices received by The Richmonder will be displayed [in our new Public Notices section](https://www.richmonder.org/legal-notice-information/).

### How to place a public notice

Send your written notice via email to: [legal@richmonder.org](mailto:legal@richmonder.org) or use The Richmonder's [website tool](https://www.richmonder.org/legal-notice-information/).

Allow three business days for publication.

A notarized affidavit and copy of the notice will be sent via email.

The cost is $150 per notice and can be paid online or by check. This is often a significant discount over print-based notices.

Each notice will reside and be searchable on The Richmonder website.

Notices will also be [uploaded to the state's online repository](https://www.publicnoticevirginia.com/%28S%28qeeuly1oymokzu24laztaxe4%29%29/default.aspx).
