Punctuality was rewarded Friday night at Manchester High. So was staying to the finish.

Huguenot, ranked seventh in the RVA Sports Network Super 12 Poll, scored on the game’s first play, then didn’t put up points again until the final three minutes, when the Falcons scored twice to escape Manchester with a wild 19-14 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.

A thick fog rolled through Chesterfield during the game’s final minutes, making it nearly impossible to see across the field. But with the game in the balance, officials allowed play to continue, and a team that has won with Charles Scott Jr.’s arm all season instead used a dash of speed to claim victory.

Fog made the action hard to follow in the final two minutes as Huguenot and host Manchester finished their regular seasons with a 19-14 Falcons victory.

Najarn Bostic ran a kickoff back 57 yards, then Aaron Bowling sealed victory with a 19-yard rushing touchdown with 20 seconds to play.

“That’s the mode we’re in right now: Whatever it takes,” Huguenot coach Charles Scott Sr. said. “I don’t care about style points.”

Scott Jr. opened the game with a touchdown pass to Iveon Lewis, but the Falcons couldn’t capitalize on the momentum they generated.

On a wet night, Huguenot fumbled the snap twice in addition to two other fumbles and made a handful of costly penalties. The Falcons generated yardage but no points, including a decision before halftime to go for a touchdown instead of kicking a 35-yard field goal.

But while Huguenot (9-1) was spinning its tires in the mud, the Lancers (8-2) were stuck in reverse.

In the game’s first 57 minutes, Manchester attempted just one play in Falcons territory – a false start penalty that knocked it back out of it.

The Lancers were sorely missing quarterback Jacory Moore-Carr, who was out with a meniscus injury.

Their defense kept them in it, though, and delivered a lead when they forced Scott to fumble deep in his own territory, and Isaiah Ballard picked it up and ran it in for a touchdown.

That, plus a 2-point conversion, gave Manchester an improbable lead and the hope that it could finish its season with a senior day victory while locking up a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Those hopes were dashed on the ensuing kickoff, which Bostic ran back for the touchdown.

Manchester now has to turn around and play in the first round of the playoffs next week. In addition to Moore-Carr's injury, the Lancers also are dealing with three additional starters who were hurt Friday night.

Meanwhile, Huguenot enters the playoffs as a top team and is back on track to potentially face Varina in what would be one of the most highly anticipated games of the postseason.

Scott Sr. told his team in the postgame huddle that he wanted them turning the page quickly and that he was asking every player on his team to give up something during the playoffs, whether it be social media, going out or something else of significance.

“You’ve got to sacrifice something as a unit to get where we’re trying to go,” he said.
