# Police impound a car used in 'street takeover' on Saturday

Police have impounded one of the vehicles used in a "street takeover" on Saturday night, using one of the legal tools they hope will discourage future events.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said Saturday night's event ended with 11 traffic stops, 10 misdemeanor charges, one felony charge and the impoundment of a vehicle.

Virginia law was changed last year to allow for up to 20 days of impoundment.

“This law provides officers with a proactive tool to address dangerous driving behavior before it results in crashes, injuries, or large-scale disruptions, and RPD will continue to use it to combat reckless driving,” Edwards wrote in a press release. “This should serve as a warning: if you gather to drive recklessly and create unsafe conditions for motorists, pedestrians, and businesses, your vehicle can be impounded.”

[Virginia Code § 46.2-865](https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title46.2/chapter8/section46.2-865/) defines exhibition driving as a driver intentionally operating a vehicle in a manner meant to show off – including burnouts, donuts, rapid acceleration, or other attention-seeking maneuvers on public roadways or in parking areas.

Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield and VCU police all assisted with the operation, as did the Virginia State Police.
