# Meadowbrook High School student left with life-threatening injuries after in-school altercation

A Meadowbrook High School student was left unconscious and hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after an on-campus fight Monday morning prompted a police response and a now-lifted lockdown.

Chesterfield County Public Schools has not provided additional updates on the student’s condition. A police spokesperson said a fellow student caused the assault and has since been taken into custody.

Starting shortly after 10 a.m., CCPS sent Meadowbrook parents a series of messages about an incident and imposed a lockdown. Around 11:30 a.m., the updates’ recipients were told the situation was safe and could optionally pick up their students.

Police stayed at the school “out of an abundance of caution,” per the messages sent to parents, and will remain for the rest of the week. The high school’s back-to-school night was postponed and will be rescheduled.

Meadowbrook’s principal, Craig Reed, authored the latest message to parents, which was sent at 12:31 p.m. 

“As principal, I am proud of the calm, responsible way our students and staff followed directions throughout the situation,” the message reads.

“As was shared previously, police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat at the school. Officers will remain present at Meadowbrook for the rest of the day as an added precaution.”

Police later said that their increased presence will be for at least the remainder of the week, and that the school is offering additional student support services as well as assistance for staff members.
