Electrical engineering company ABB announced Tuesday afternoon that it is expanding operations in Henrico County.

The expansion is a $28.5 million investment that will create more than 100 new jobs. It’ll include office spaces and the production of medium voltage uninterruptible power supply systems, which were originally only being manufactured in New Zealand, said Senior Vice President Sully Sullivan.

“Virginia is in the SEC of economic development,” Youngkin said, referring to college football’s most powerful conference. “We compete against Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas every single day. And we are winning. And today is a huge win for the Commonwealth of Virginia, a huge win for Henrico County.”

The announcement follows drug maker company Eli Lilly’s plans [to build a manufacturing facility in Goochland](https://www.richmonder.org/goochland-lands-5-billion-pharmaceutical-plant-its-fourth-fortune-500-company/). It also comes after Red River Foods announced an expanded production line two weeks ago, said Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas.

ABB already has a building at 5900 Eastport Blvd that employs 184 workers, just two miles away from the expanded facility where the announcement took place. It already produces equipment for data centers and hospitals like servers and MRI machines.

A $300,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund assisted the county with the project.

Sullivan told The Richmonder that the expansion was needed due to the demand for products the company produces.

“This is an investment in technology, but more importantly, it's an investment in our people,” he said.

ABB, headquartered in Switzerland, has already been in Henrico for the last 57 years. The expanded location will be ready for operations by the end of the year.
