Richmonders will get an extra two weeks to comment on the second draft of the city’s proposed rezoning.

On Thursday the city announced the comment period will remain open until March 1, citing the impact of recent winter storms. It previously had been set to close Feb. 15\.

“The recent and persistent winter weather has been challenging for our community engagement efforts,” said Mayor Danny Avula. “Shifting the timeline ensures that community members have the time and space to continue sharing thoughtful feedback that is essential to creating a zoning code that reflects the needs and priorities of our many diverse neighborhoods.”

The second draft was released Nov. 18, meaning residents will ultimately have had about three and a half months to comment on it.

The rezoning, known as code refresh, aims to modernize Richmond’s 1970s-era zoning [as well as increase density](https://www.richmonder.org/the-next-50-years-richmonds-zoning-overhaul-envisions-a-denser-city-what-will-that-look-like/) in an effort to encourage the development of more affordable housing.

[Significant changes were made between the first and second drafts](https://www.richmonder.org/second-draft-of-zoning-overhaul-draws-cautious-hope-from-neighborhood-groups-but-some-concern-from-housing-advocates/), many of them in response to property owners’ and neighborhood associations’ concerns.
